A BRIEF HISTORY OF MAZDA
Mazda has one of the auto industry’s more interesting histories, since it began life as a cork factory in 1920s Japan. The company eventually moved into making machine tools, which led to the development of its first vehicle, the 1931 Mazda-go that was a motorized tri-cycle with a small cargo box. It wasn’t until 1960 that the first Mazda passenger car, the R360, debuted. The 1960s also saw Mazda put a sharp focus on rotary engines, and that helped raise the brand’s profile significantly — although the relatively poor efficiency of rotary engines led to their downfall after the 1970s oil crisis. A 40-year partnership with Ford followed and set the stage for Mazda’s success as a solo automaker.
